Don't tell anyone...but I bought a new book today. I know I know...I made a resolution at the beginning of the year that I wouldn't buy any new books until I've read all the ones I already own. Well, I haven't been so good with that one. Granted, I've been doing a lot of reading but I'm not quite caught up because I keep getting distracted with books I check out from the library.
The book I bought is Eat My Words by Janet Theophano. The sub-title is "Reading Women's Lives through the Cookbooks They Wrote." So are you with me on this one??! Who could possibly resist a book with a title like that!? When you think of it, our country's history and culture are absolutely reflected in our cookbooks. I'm sure some of you may think "D'uh" but this just twigged with my brain! I have a cookbook I got from the FREE bin at Liberty Hall and it is full of recipes cut from Good Housekeeping magazines in the late 1930's and 1940's. (Can you say SCORE!?) It is full of tidbits like "This cake recipe is worth saving your rations!" or "Your man will be pleased with this casserole!"
Also, I think Eat My Words appealed to me because I have some of my Daddy's cookbooks and I SWOON when I come to a page with his writing...a comment about a recipe, ingredient modifications, etc. Just delights me to no end to see his crazy chickenscratch! My Daddy's writing.
Hope you enjoy your day, dear reader.
I so enjoyed reading this blog!
I collect cookbooks, so I got a kick out of this one! I don't actually cook as much as I collect, but I LOVE to try new recipes and I am a huge follower of the food channel!
